Katy ISD school choice in Cinco Ranch: options beyond your zoned campus

2026-10-23 6 min read By Carol Jukes, Broker/Owner

In Katy ISD, the school your child attends starts with the address, and most Cinco Ranch students stay at their zoned campus. But the district also runs real options beyond that assignment: Miller Career & Technology Center for half-day career and technical programs, an engineering pathway and KAP and dual credit inside Cinco Ranch High School, the Legacy Virtual High School, and the new High School Limited Open Enrollment. Each has its own eligibility, space limits, and application window, so the honest answer is to match the option to your child's grade level and verify the current dates with Katy ISD.

In Katy ISD, the school your child attends is set by your address and the district's current attendance boundaries, and the great majority of Cinco Ranch students go to their zoned campus. That is the baseline every parent should understand first. But zoned is not the whole story: the district also runs a handful of options beyond that assignment, from half-day career and technical programs to an engineering pathway inside Cinco Ranch High School, a districtwide virtual high school, and the brand-new Limited Open Enrollment. This guide sorts out which options are real, who they are for, and what to verify before you act on any of them.

First, the baseline: your address decides your zoned campus

Before any choice option matters, the starting point is the same for every Katy ISD family: the campus a student is assigned to is determined by the home address and the attendance boundaries in force for that school year. Katy ISD draws those boundaries by street, so two homes a few blocks apart can be zoned to different schools, and boundaries can shift between years as new campuses open. Never assume one school serves all of Cinco Ranch, and never trust a neighbor's guess for your exact street. The only reliable check is the district's own school-finder or boundary lookup using your precise address.

Miller Career & Technology Center: half-day programs, home campus stays

For juniors and seniors, the biggest choice option in Katy ISD is Miller Career & Technology Center (MCTC), the district's career and technical education campus. Any Katy ISD high school student, including a student zoned to Cinco Ranch High School, can attend MCTC for part of the school day while remaining enrolled at their home campus for their other classes. Programs cover a range of career and technical fields, including engineering and STEM programs of study. Space is limited, seats go through the district's own process, and both the catalog and the application details are updated each year, so the current MCTC page on the Katy ISD website is the authority.

Inside Cinco Ranch High School: engineering, KAP, and dual credit

For students who stay at their zoned campus, a lot of the depth is already in the building. Cinco Ranch High School offers engineering through its career and technical education program, and the district pairs that with a broader Engineering Pathway run with the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering and Houston Community College, where students can be co-enrolled starting in high school. Alongside that, the Katy Advanced Program (KAP) provides above-grade-level coursework, including English I KAP and English II KAP at Cinco Ranch High, and the school runs a dual-credit partnership with Houston Community College in which a college course earns both high school and college credit at once. Advanced Placement courses round out the options. These are the programs many Cinco Ranch families never think to ask about, and a zoned student already has access to them.

Legacy Virtual High School: a districtwide online option

Katy ISD also operates Legacy Virtual High School, the district's own virtual campus for students who want full-time or supplemental online learning. It is open to Katy ISD students, including students zoned to Cinco Ranch campuses, and enrollment is handled directly through the district. The district's registration page lists spring-semester registration opening on December 1, which makes late fall the time for families with an online option in mind to start. Confirm the current semester's dates on the Katy ISD registration page, because the schedule changes from term to term.

High School Limited Open Enrollment: the new option, and its limits

In June 2026 Katy ISD announced High School Limited Open Enrollment, a new districtwide program that launched for the fall 2026 school year. It does not work like a free-choice transfer system. Eligibility is tied to the student's address, with high school students living within roughly a 75-mile radius of the I-10 and Highway 99 (Grand Parkway) interchange eligible to apply, and applicants choose from approved campus options linked to their designated Extended Attendance Zone rather than from any school in the district. Enrollment is deliberately capped, with each campus able to take a limited number of transfer students each year so no school is overcrowded, and seats are offered only where space exists. The district's registration page lists the application window as reopening on October 15, 2026. This program matters most to families outside Katy ISD or those seeking a different Katy ISD campus, and the details are still settling, so treat the district page as the only reliable source.

What this means if you are buying in Cinco Ranch

If a specific program matters to your family, use it to inform rather than to assume. Your address still decides your zoned campus, so confirm that first with the district's boundary lookup. Then ask what that campus actually offers, because the relevant programs, KAP and dual credit included, are tied to the school itself. And keep in mind that every option above has its own eligibility, capacity, and application window, and none of them is guaranteed by buying in a given neighborhood. A local agent can help you compare the schools and programs that match your family's priorities, but the district's own pages are the final word.
